day five

how on earth does culzean castle not fall off the edge? and how annoying is it that the view of the front of the house is impossible to get since the front faces out to sea?

this is a huge place, organised and manicured and definitely a Visitor Experience. but for all that it's nifty - the walled garden, just getting going when we were there, will be magnificent in summer (and the cutting garden of tulips is great now). the deer are so used to people they are a walking (lounging) photo opp for anyone with a lens. there are lots of spots off to the side (the orangery, gas house, lake and beaches) so tho there are people around it never felt crowded. and the house - despite the annoying lack of detail and general fiddliness of the iphone audio guide - is cool. but not being allowed to take photos *and then discovering there is no guidebook to buy* (it's not printed in time as they wanted to take pix of the new staircarpet, which was late being laid - ffs) rather pissed me off.
