Orphan girls

Today I've been listening to the new Gillian Welch album and it's reminded me of one of her older songs, Orphan Girl

So this seems like a fitting image. It lists some of the girls who died in Liverpool Female Orphan Asylum in the 1840s and 50s and can be found in the graveyard at the city's Anglican Cathedral. I can't help but wonder what their lives were like and how they came to die... I hope they had some happiness in their short lives although I fear they had plenty of sadness.
