ditch the cars

lately ive been spending some of my mornings as a naturalist for kids camp at a rather infamous northern michigan locale. harbor point is the peninsula which creates the harbor in the town of harbor springs. the peninsula long ago became the location of summer homes for the very wealthy, some of the biggest names in american business. huge homes often visited just a few weeks each summer with perfectly manicured lawns, impeccable flower gardens, beautiful beaches and docks full of boats. it is the type of place you enter and can simply feel the money you're surrounded by. built in a time when there were no automobiles, the residents abandon their cars for the summer and ride bikes around the rather large area. and i smile to myself to see those people we often think would drive even just a few blocks zipping around on their bikes, not a care in the world.
