SkyRaider
Duxford flying legends airshow today. Fantastic show that was spoilt by an accident right at the end of the day.
On the final flypast of the day (or balbo) a Skyraider flanked by two Mustangs made a pass over the airfield and at the end of the runway the 1st Mustang banked left, closely followed by the Skyraider. Unfortunately the Skyraider banked too hard and his right wing 'thumped' the front of the Mustang.
The skyraider lost most of his wing, but due to some exceptional piloting and a very strong aircraft the pilot was able to bring it in to land safely.
The Mustang pilot wasnt so lucky, and after 15 seconds of bravely trying to regain control, he pointed the stricken aircraft at a nearby field, pulled the canopy back and bailed out. All this was done at a height well below what would be considered ok for a safe parachute jump!
The last news that i've heard is that the pilot got up and walked away but his Mustang was scrap!
Didnt get any pictures of the collision, but the Skyraider pulled up in front of us after his emergency landing, and you can clearly see the damaged wing. Two VERY lucky pilots!
