Change of Pace Day

Wednesday at camp is always such a change from the routine. The wake-up bell rings much earlier than usual because the campers who have chosen to hike to Avalon all leave camp at 7:00 a.m. so they need to get ready, eat breakfast, and assemble for instructions. The hike can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. For many years Mr. Fun has hiked to town, but not this year.

If campers are not excited about the concept of hiking, they also have the option of riding the boat, the Blanche W. to Avalon. It's included in the camp registration. Those who opt for the boat get two return time options -- 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. and sack lunches are brought to town for all hikers and boaters.

The third option is to stay in camp. That's the option we chose. In the 30+ years that we've been enjoying camp, we've stayed in camp only once or twice on Avalon Day. Each time that we have gone to Avalon, we wonder why we haven't stayed in camp. Avalon is quite small with only restaurants, bars, and doodah shops. There are few tours and excursions, but over the years we've done most of those.

The Wednesday breakfast is always a buffet with "sticky buns" or cinnamon buns and oatmeal or dry cereal. This year our chef made sausage links and scrambled eggs--delicious!! Staying in camp was quite peaceful and lovely and a very good time with Tristan who mostly wants to play in the play yard or at the waterfront during the afternoon. The buffalo was spotted in upper camp and that thrills the kids. Tristan was also excited about helping the waterfront worker clean the seaweed from the beach during the morning.

The biggest Wednesday excitement was the concert that evening with Danny Oertli and his wife, Rayna. We thoroughly enjoy Danny's music..
