One good tern deserves another...
I'm absolutely gobsmacked at the reaction to yesterday's horsefly - I never realised so many people would find her as fascinating as I did! Thank you so much for all the comments and the favourites - I'm overwhelmed! And the 'tache was real - it's actually tiny antennae. I could have shown you another horsefly tonight, as Pete brought back a large marsh horsefly (Tabanus autumnalis) from his fieldwork today. But she's much drabber and doesn't have such pretty eyes - just a hulking brute really!
After dropping Alex at the station this morning, I took the dogs along the river, and was surprised to hear the raucous screeching of a baby tern on the rowing lake. I scanned around, wondering where on earth it could be, and then spotted it, with one of its parents, on the weed-cutting boat that was so popular with the heron. I took a few record shots, and then was lucky enough to capture this image of the other parent bringing a fish for ithe baby. I'm not sure where they would have bred - presumably not too far away.
Otherwise it's been a quiet day. I've ordered a new lens for my camera, finally getting around to upgrading my broken 18-55mm kit lens. It should arrive in the next couple of days, which will give me a chance to practice with it before our Orkney trip. Alex had a much better day at college, complete with a walk round the Shuttleworth estate and a barbecue, and had no trouble with the travelling. And I've been making vague preparations for Chris's return from Sweden tomorrow, and Ben's birthday on Thursday. It's all go!!
