A little piece of America
This is a very important part of the United States. On land donated by the University of Cambridge this is the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial. On the right of this shot is the Memorial Wall of Portland stone. Engraved on it are the names of 5,127 servicemen and women lost in action but whose remains were not found - some are marked with a rosette to indicate that their remains were identified later. To the left are the graves of a further 3,812; some of the crosses are visible beyond the trees. At the far end of the reflecting pools are the memorial and chapel.
Many of those remembered here were aircrew based at the USAAF air stations which dotted Cambridgeshire and East Anglia and this is the only American World War II cemetery in the British Isles. At the end of the war the remains of many of the US servicemen and women interred in other parts of the country were brought here for reburial.
Only a very brief visit on the way back from Milton Keynes but I plan to spend more time there. For more details visit the American Battle Monuments Commission site.
Enjoy what's left of Tuesday!
