Independence Day

A statute of President Abraham Lincoln strikes an imposing figure on top of a monument to the American Civil War which followed the War of Independence nearly 80 years before.

Sometimes known as the Emancipation Memorial, it depicts a freed slave extending his arms in gratitude to Lincoln and commemorates Scots who fought for the Union in the Civil War.

The monument was erected in Edinburgh's Calton Cemetery in 1893, featuring the first statue to an American President outwith the USA. It is also thought to be the only monument to the Civil War outwith the US.

The inscription, taken from Lincoln's writings, states: "To preserve the jewel of liberty in the framework of Freedom."
