Had a trip along the Moray coast taking in Speymouth and Portgordon. Found this barometer niche in part of the harbour wall at Portgordon. Unfortunatley the barometer has now been replaced with a plastic plaque so not much help to fishermen. From the picture it looks like one of the old mercury "Fortin" type barometers. The bit at the top says it was presented to Portgordon for the use of the fishermen in 1859 and was removed from this niche to village hall in the early 1980s. It can still be seen there. In today's upside down world you probably have to wear a yellow jacket to go within 6 feet of so much mercury. Some older readers may remember their physics teacher allowing them to put their fingers in the stuff to show that they didn't get wet. Or floating pennies on it. The plaque quotes a biblical verse which I assume was part of the original presentation although it's not clear.
