Isle of May

Sands organised a dive trip to the Isle of May for members of Divetech and Lothian Divers, 2 dive clubs based in Edinburgh.

Due to the tides, it was a very early start, we were on the beach at North Berwick, ready to launch the rhibs at 07:00. Twenty divers joined the trip, eight on two rhibs and the remainder on a hardboat out of Dunbar. Cyclops was testing new kit so opted for the hardboat this time.

Fortunately the weather was superb and we had an easy journey out there, by comparison with last weekend!. Added to that the underwater visibility was fantastic and there were plenty of seabirds to watch during the surface interval.

S & I did our first dive at the seal colony on the south-east corner of the island, we had plenty of seals buzzing around but they weren't brave enough to come very close. The rocks at this end of the island form steps and gullies & in the vis we had today there was plenty to explore.

Our second dive was in the bay at the north-west, where the island forms a bottle-neck. We spent some time on the wreck of the Anlaby then wandered off along the rocks.

I couldn't choose one picture so here's a montage, clockwise from top left;
1. Blury S, my camera focused on the water droplet on the housing, rather than S but I really like the effect, there are 2 small versions of S in the droplet.
2. One of the many seals that came to have a look at us on our fist dive
3. Outstanding underwater vis, S exploring one of the gullies
4. Propellor and rudder on the wreck of the Anlaby

When we got back to North Berwick it was the top if the tide so we had time for an ice-cream before recovering the boats. I finally got home at 20:15 - a long day, but well worth the effort!

Thanks to Sands and everyone else for a great day!
