Thatched cottages
D at the post office told me to walk down the lane by the stream to look at more scarecrows that have been erected for Carnival Week. I passed these old cottages which are often missed when driving through the village as they are down a cul-de-sac and thought they made a better blip than the scarecrows!
The thatch on the right has been netted to prevent birds from nesting and pulling out the reed in the roof. Thatch provides a lot of insulation making the cottages warm in winter and cool in summer, it also encourages spiders! Over the years there have been a number of thatch fires, especially in pubs, all started by a spark from the chimney catching the thatch alight.
This afternoon took my turn supervising at the village art exhibition in the church during the street fayre while T and N turned the grass for haymaking.
