I'm Alright, Jack.
Friends furnished us with this fine foliate face.
I've always found the Green Man interesting (& no, Im not talking about a pub!). Especially when he appears in churches. At first it seems odd that a pre-Christian symbol of fertility should adorn the ceiling bosses & corbels of churches & cathedrals, but folk beliefs were routinely absorbed into early Christian tradition. It is no coincidence that Christmas is celebrated at mid-winter!
As he is such an ancient character, found across Europe, Asia & Africa, I was suprised to learn that the term "Green Man" to describe a foliate face was first used in 1939, in a book by Lady Raglan, who likened it to the Jack in the Green of May Day celebrations.
