Mystery plant

This apparently boring looking plant popped up in our garden and 
proceded to pretty much defy all attempts to identify it. The closest
we can get is Woolly Buttercup Ranunculus nemorosus
although when I googled it it doesn't seem to occur in the UK at all
though is found in mainland Europe.
