Charity Begins at Home
The Pink White Elephant thrift store accepts donations of everything from kitchen utensils and clothing to furniture and antiques.
It turns around and sells them at thrift store prices. Very inexpensive.
Each October, during White Elephant Days, there's a huge parade and outdoor country fair (no carnival rides or anything like that). But the thrift store Board of Directors announces which charities and organizations in and around town will split over a million dollars in donations that the White Elephant made in profit that year.
The store has only one paid staff person and is run solely by volunteers.
