In the 1930's someone had to descend to the depths two floors below here in order to shovel coke into a furnace and turn lots of valves.
In the 1960's someone had to descend in order to carefully set a mechanical timer to arrange when the oil-fired boilers clicked on and off - a very imprecise calculation.
These days all you need is a fingertip....
