Harmer Terracotta
Jonathan Harmer was the son of a Heathfield stonemason who created a method of attaching terracotta bas-reliefs to gravestones. Harmer died in 1839. The manufacture of the plaques and the secret of the mortar used to fix them, died with him. Around 30 of these Harmer terracottas survive in churchyards in East Sussex. This one is at St Mary's church in Glynde.
