I was commenting as I took this photo "It's a bit of a shame that I'm taking a picture of an old style independent shop like it's a novelty". Well, it is though, isn't it? Thankfully Whitby almost entirely consists of independent shops and cafes. There doesn't appear to be a chain restaurant in the place, what a blessed relief that is.

Left beloved Whitby today for Rockcliffe Hall in Darlington. Drove through some fairly industrial parts of the UK, stopping off at the eerily deserted Staithes on the way. We nearly rented a cottage here (instead of staying in Whitby) - ee by gum I'm glad we didn't.
