The Wall
The longest surviving section of The Wall in Berlin is now a series of murals, painted by artists from all over, starting not long after reunification. The whole lot was redone a few years ago by all but ten of those original artists. five had died and five were not interested.
I always get choked up when I come here as it symbolises so much: freedom for those who succeeeded in bringing it down, though they found a whole new set of problems and challenges came with their freedom; oppression in the form of barriers, physical or otherwise, that still trap so many people in the world. We've come a long way but in so much we haven't moved at all.
