Arches.

These arches are supporting the weight of the bridge, and one of the entrances into Newcastle, over the River Tyne. The high Level Bridge, with cars underneath and trains on top.
My great grandfather drove the 'Ha-penny Lop', a horsedrawn brake, over this bridge from Newcastle to Gateshead. He was often drunk by the end of the day, and it is said that the horse could find its own way home.
