Luckily Sicily has enough going for it to put that question aside temporarily. Mount Etna created the land here - the beach is an eroded lava flow. It must be strange to live with the threat of eruptions; less than 10 years ago the surrounding area was blanketed in a thick layer of ash.

Meh, as long as it didn't block my way to the pastries at breakfast, I could cope.
