Flee Tying
First fishing trip of the year on Monday - a week up on the River Dee. Looks like we might need our thermals and snow goggles.
Tying flies is a part of fishing that adds an extra bit of satisfaction and lets you dream about the good fishing to come when you can't get out fishing. Catching a salmon on a fly you have tied yourself is one of the most rewarding things about it all.
I'm not very good, but thought I'd tie one to remind myself that I can do it. Blipped it through the different stages.
Technical stuff, only interesting to fisherpeople:
This fly is called a Cascade - a variation on a famous shrimp fly invented by Ally Gowans. I was lucky enough to have a casting lesson with him a few years ago.
Flee recipe -
- bare hook
- add a ribbing (wire and tinsel)
- tie in a tail
- add some flashy stuff to tail
- wind tinsel, add body floss, wind ribbing over it all
- add a wing and some more flashy stuff
- tie in a yellow feather
- wind into a hackle
- tie in orange feather
- wind into a hackle
- pull back hackle and tie off the head
- varnish head and have a wee dram while it dries
Go fishing!
