The Buschel or St. Michaels Chapel near Ottobeuren

Stands alone on a hill to the north of Ottobeuren but hidden from the town by trees. Here a long distance shot.

For the last 10 years, we have passed this building thinking it was another monument to the best known local, Sebastian Kneipp. Today Flash & I finally took the time to walk up the track & now I know it's a chapel.

Despite the plaque, not quite sure of its history. It appears there was a fort on the site from earliest times (Ottobeuren was founded in the 5th Century), the chapel was built in 1714, closed as a result of the Napoleonic secularization in 1805 and turned into a hunting lodge until 1852 when it was converted back to a chapel. The doors are locked but through the glass in the door, I was able to take a few interior shots.

Certainly a worthwhile walk, pleasant views of the surrounding countryside, I learnt a bit more about the local history and Flash got to smell a few new scents.
