Church of the Holy Cross
This is the oldest church in Croatia and stands within the city walls of Nin, just a few miles north of Petrcane. It dates from the 9th Century.
The Velebit Mountains can be seen in the background again.
Sunday morning saw Therry get up and swim in the sea, the outdoor pool and the indoor pool before breakfast.
After breakfast we wandered down into Petrcane for a bit more of an explore.
We wanted to check out bus times to various places as we had decided not to hire a car.
We found the bus stop and met a charming gentleman who had been born here, but moved to New York aged 3 and now retitred to California.
Apparently he was 85, but he didn't look it.
He had family in the area and frequently visited.
We jotted down the bus times and noticed that there was a bus to Nin in a few minutes. We wanted to go there at some point so now was an ideal time.
The bus dropped us on the edge of Nin and we walked down the street towards the bridge to the "Old City".
The entrance arch is under renovation and buried under scaffolding so I didn't take any pictures.
We explored the old city and had a coffee.
It is a very small "city" covering about 250m x 250m.
After coffee we wandered off to try and find the stables that Therry had found out about in nearby Zaton (or Zuton) as I called it!).
So, like a couple of mad dogs, we set off in the mid-day sun to walk the couple of Km to the resort village next to the small settlement of Zaton.
We ended up taking a long route as we had no map and were following road signs. We eventually found the resort and the stables. Therry made enquiries about having a ride later in the week. We also found a plan of the site and local environs, which revealed a short-cut back to Nin.
On the way out to Zaton we saw the 11th Century Church of St Nicholas, perched on an old burial mound. On trying to explore the church I discovered a large hornet's nest by the door. I renamed it the Sacred Church of the Holy Wasps, and fled!
An image of this is in my blipfolio.
We got the bus bact to Petrcane from Nin and went out for a meal at another lovely resturant just back from the seafront. It had a balcony to sit on to dine. More beer to wash down a great pizza and some mixed mussels.
Italian influences feature quite heavily in the menus.
