A 5 Guinea Suit for 55 Shillings

Moshe Osinsky arrived from Lithuania in 1900 and changed his name to Montague Burton. Having borrowed £100 he set up his "reasonably priced made to measure suit" business. People appeared to like this idea and pretty soon he had outlets everywhere.
Many of his premises in the 20s and 30s were Art Deco style buildings designed by Henry Wilson. These were often built with dance halls or billiard halls on the upper floor, as a way of attracting customers!
Quite a few Burton stores still occupy these buildings to this day.
This picture was taken in Dumfries.
