Lumber Jills
These are chocolate and vanilla fairy cakes (not cupcakes) I made for the brownies tonight. They had a real life lumber Jill round to talk to them about life during the war. Lumber Jills took over forrestry roles while the men went off to war. Looking at the small old woman (89 to be exact) you could hardly believe that at the age of 19 she left home to stay in a freezing hut and chop down trees like a man.
We were trying to stress to the brownies that before the war women simply didn't work. That it was because of women like this old lady that we now work.
She said she enjoyed her work that she used to go to the dances on the weekend. That is were she met her husband. They fell in love but she had to wait for 3 years while he was overseas before they could marry.
These lumber Jills were only recognised and given medels for their work during the war in 2008.
