We Will Remember Them
I pass this Cenotaph each day to and from work, and decided to blip it today, unfortunately after doing some research I was really a day out for the aniversary of his evacuation from Dunkirk - 70 yrs ago, or possibly early for the anniversary of his death.
Jack enlisted at Birmingham at the age of 19, his service number was 5113010. He was posted to France on the 18.08.1940, and evacuated from Dunkirk on the 30.05.1941.
Jack returned to france on D Day, being promoted to acting Corporal on the 17.07.1944.
He was killed outside the village of Emieville on the 20.07.1944
Corporal W.J.Millard crawled toward the enemy Spandau with his Bren gun, then got up and rushed it,firing from the hip. He killed two of the enemy, only to be mortally wounded himself.:The next day the Germans had left Emieville unoccupied.Jack is buried with his mates either side of him, at Ranville cemetary. Just outside Caen not far from were he fell.
We will remember them.
