Er, Can you lend us a fiver?
Struggled a bit for inspiration today, but this caught my eye.
This notice is on a local drinking fountain, which serves as a memorial to the Rev. Henry Glossop, vicar of All Saints Church 1822-55.
I've struggled to find out much about his life, but following his retirement he continued to live in Isleworth until his death in 1870, when the fountain was erected. He must have been held in esteem as it was paid for by public subscription. What's more, it still works!
The wording is quite weathered, so if you're struggling to decipher it:
"The water supplied to this fountain is given for drinking purposes only and any person fouling it or carrying it away for domestic of other use is liable to a fine of five pounds. Isleworth Dec 1874 (?) A.B. Day"
