Something for the Weekend Sir?
After yesterday's post I realised that a visit to the barbers was overdue, so, between showers, Euan and I headed down here this morning.
That's Mullsie. Not Mulsy, Mullsy, Mulsay or Mullsay. Despite having been frequenting this establishment since just after it opened in 19-canteen for numerous short backs and sides I realised that I didn't know why our beaming barber was called this. Or how to spell it. So, after bringing it up today, it turns out even his two glamourous assistants didn't know either. His first name's Wilson and there's no obvious link to that, but it turns out it's because his grandfather was named Millson and nicknamed Millsie. So Millsie begat Mullsie by some logic or other and Mullsie opened up his barber shop here in 1967 and has been here ever since.
As well as being a barbers it was for a long time a sporting supplies shop too, specialising in angling and other country pursuits. Locals of a certain age have all bought a few 'puggies' (catapults), airguns and ammunition for them, as well as less dangerous fishing gear over those shelves. Oh, and the odd pack of three that sat near the mirrors for other more urban pursuits.
Cheers Mullsie, and of course the two other cheery scissor wielding (but more camera shy) staff in there today. I hope you got your sausage roll and beans sorted out for lunch, and will catch up with you again in 3 or 4 weeks.
