The bleakest book I ever read

The Big Ugly Monster and the Little Stone Rabbit.

The Big Ugly Monster lives alone. He is so ugly that plants wither, wildlife runs away and rocks crack. He is not a nasty monster, just an ugly one.
He carves a rabbit out of stone and it does not crack. The monster talks to the rabbit, plays games with the rabbit, sings to the rabbit. The rabbit does nothing. The ugly monster doesn't mind.
After a very very long time the monster does not come out from his cave in the morning. Plants grow, wildlife returns. People sometimes wonder how the rabbit got there.
