Sweet
Strawberries.
On my foray to the grocery store yesterday, where I got my Sour blip, I bought four quarts of strawberries. They are sweet as sugar. Hmmm...
My nutritionist tells me that strawberries are the food highest in vitamin C per serving.
I'm dangerously low in iron for someone with chronic kidney disease.
My nephrologist (kidney doctor) told me when I saw him last that he wanted to avoid putting me on IV iron, and because of the side effects, didn't want to give me a supplement. So I needed to get more iron from my diet.
So it was back to the nutritionist where I learned that pearl of wisdom about the vitamin C. And why is that important? Because eating iron rich foods [but low in protein] is not going to help as much unless you eat foods rich in vitamin C with them.
I've talked about my meal plan a little before. I can only have four "meats" a day. Those are ounces. So things that had previously been prohibited like dried fruit and raw spinach were added in small amounts a couple of times a week. Now, the benefits of iron have to be weighed against the negatives of potassium.
A renal diet is a balancing act. I will do anything to save my kidneys.
