door....3
this door is the entrance to the Old Malthouse situated near the entrance of the old WIllow Gate which was removed in 1782 and was originally part of the 13th century town wall?
according to Wikipedia a malt house, or maltings, is a building where cereal grain is converted into malt by soaking it in water, allowing it to sprout and then drying it to stop further growth. I wonder if it still
smells inside......:)
The malt is used in brewing beer, whisky and in certain foods. ...
I have no idea what the malt produced behind this door long ago was used for?.more likely for bread, cakes & beer I'd think than whiskey?.???
The building itself is beautifully restored on the outside?.and looks very attractive?though I have no idea when it was converted to the Business Centre it is now?.nor why it had/has bars across the windows......
On the plaque on a wall nearby it seems it has been restored by the Shropshire Building Preservation Trust.. or Oswestry Civic Society?..
By the way I heard this morning that the traffic lights by door 2 were the 1st set of traffic lights in our town?.. they breed well?...:):)
