back from South America

Our neighborhood family of mississippi kites (Ictinia mississippiensis) is back from wintering in South America! The first day we spot them is a day of celebration. They usually arrive around the beginning of May and leave in late September. So glorious in flight and stunning raptors.
One of the main predators of their eggs and young is the great horned owl. If you've seen my last few blips you'll notice the blips of the family of great horned less than a mile from here. It will be an interesting summer seeing who survives. Ah, 'nature, red in tooth and claw'.
