Stepping Out

The little grey chick walked past me when I was cleaning my car. It had a few ruffled feathers and looked like it had been in a close encounter with a cat. I first thought it was a young pigeon, but then the mother arrived to check on it, and they then looked like partridges. On looking up the bird book now I am not so sure. As they seem quite tame and used to me, my final guess is some kind of hen? Come on all you birdwatchers, put me out of my ignorance.
