Colourful male bits.

These beautiful structures are, I think, the male pollen producing cones of the Pacific silver fir, Abies amabilis and were photographed in the policies of Haddo House.

Grown in Scotland as an ornamental the species is native to SE Alaska, coastal British Columbia, and along the western slopes in the Cascade Range in Washington and Oregon. The silver fir is also known as Alpine fir, Amabilis fir, Balsam, Balsam fir, Cascade fir, Fir, Great silver fir, Larch, Lovely fir, Pacific silver fir, Red fir, Silver fir, Western fir and White fir.
