Today's the day .................. to go for a paddle

This beautiful mute swan was giving its wings a bit of a shake as I walked along the banks of the River Kent. The thing to notice though, is that it is standing with its feet on the bottom of the riverbed while it does it - the river being only a few inches deep.

A few months ago, the water would have been about six feet deep at this point and the river would have been a fast-flowing torrent rushing down on its way to the sea at Morecambe Bay.

It has been an exceptionally dry spring so far around here and although it is probably just asking for trouble if I say it - we really could do with a bit of rain .....................?!
