Sgwarnog: In the Field

Bradford Maypole

It being May 1st, we headed into town for the Bradford May Day celebrations, held at the "Urban Garden" which has for the moment been reclaimed for the people of the city from the Westfield developers.

We had a nod to both readings/origins of May Day. In the modern sense, radical Bradford was very much on show, indeed it seemed largely responsible for creating and curating the event, ensuring the events of Haymarket in 1886 are not forgotten. In the pagan sense we had a maypole, at least, and some timeless dancing.

We were there for the kids to have some fun though, and they enjoyed the street performers and painting a mural, but found the music a tad inaccessible. It was great to see a friendly, uncommercialised, community-led event right at the heart of the city. It could have been a village fayre, and I expect that was what was hoped for.

A nice way to bring up 150 blips.
