Hurried shot

Herons regularly 'fish' for food along the banks of our pond. We watched this morning as this one stocked his prey. He finally came up with a huge fish, almost out of range of my 400mm zoom lens. We actually thought he had 'bitten off' more than he could chew. After holding it in his mouth for awhile, he left the water's edge and took his catch up on land. I guess he figured that if he dropped it on land he could still retrieve it before it got away. He eventually swallowed it and went on his way, probably looking for chips to go with his fish. :-)
