Circle of the Seasons

Blueberries

These pretty buds will bloom and ripen and eventually end up in my morning pancakes.

We net the bushes near the house to stop the birds from eating them all, but they have self-seeded all over the back pasture so there are tons for the animals too. Bears love them, and we get quite a few black furry visitors down by the stream when berries are in season.

There are two huge tall bushes on Turtle Point, each a different variety, and the onion field is covered with low-bush plants, which have smaller fruit.

When I was little one of the greatest treats of summers in Maine was going outside in the early morning to pick blueberries for breakfast. Now I have more than we can eat, and we end up making jam and freezing them for pies in the winter.
