Major Yard Work: Day 2
'Operation Major Yard Work' Day 2 started off well. My head was definitely back in the game, most of the fogginess from my cold had cleared. Thank you God for that! Cause today was a doozy in the physical labor department.
My husband's project today was trimming and shaping our long row of arborvitae. A monstrous job. But an important job. These trees give our backyard much needed shade on hot summer days. And since my husband likes things neat and tidy, shaping trees is definitely the job for him. We used to go round and round about his love for shaping bushes. He used to make all of our shrubs perfect balls when we first moved in. At first I thought that he was kidding, but after a few months of it I realized that the look would be staying. I slowly started suggesting letting the shrubs loosen up a bit. Maybe not be so circular so we compromised. They are still neat and tidy but still have that loose sprig natural look. But the arborvitae's look cool neatly cropped and trimmed so as hard as the job is, I know that he secretly kind of enjoys it.
While he was working on that project, I was loading dirt from the trailer into the wheelbarrow, rolling it around back and filling the low spots in our yard. But I had a helper. This morning while our son was at preschool, our daughter was my #1 fan. I say 'fan' because while she was helping me shovel dirt she would say, "You are doing a great job Mommy". And when she was helping me unload the dirt from the wheelbarrow, it was, "This is great Mom". She helped me every single step of the way with her little yellow shovel. She had that look of feeling so important and it made me think of how happy it used to make me when I got to help my Dad with yard projects. And when our son got home from preschool, he grabbed his shovel and his little wheelbarrow and joined us. At one point I said, "Okay team, let's go get some dirt". My son replied, "OKAY!" and I could hear our daughter singing behind us, "A team, a team, I on a team".
We emptied the trailer full of dirt at the same time that my husband finished his trimming project. He did a beautiful job as always. We have another trailer full of dirt to move tomorrow but this is a job that we've been needing to do for a while. Our nephews will be spending the afternoon with us so we will get the project done even faster with so many helpers. :) Looking forward to working together tomorrow, watching the kids play and having fun, and seeing this project progress to completion. Every time my husband gets a day off from his work schedule, we seem to get involved in something new. And this weather has been gorgeous so the timing was right. Fresh air and being outside all day long, that has been really nice.
