Burrow Mump
A few miles north of Taunton you're into the Somerset levels - a large area of flat and fertile land, much of which floods in winter. Some areas of higher land are naturally higher, such as Glastonbury Tor and Burrow Mump, and these islands were settled by people who could make a living from fish and birds in the surrounding areas.
In the ninth century AD King Alfred spent some time at nearby Athelney mustering forces to attack the invading Danes. It is likely that a crucial battle against the Danes was fought here. We call this country England from the Angles, who settled from the Schleswig-Holstein area in Germany, but with a slightly different course of history I guess we could be speaking Danish and calling it Daneland. It is because of Alfred that things turned out they way they did and that is why he is remembered in history. Oh, and he probably burnt the cakes somewhere round here too.
This Chapel on the top of the Mump (which apparently means 'hill') was built in the 13th century. It was rebuilt several times before they gave up and built a new church in the village. It's pretty much a ruin now.
Believe it or not, this is actually my 100th blip! Thanks folks for your kind comments and encouragement. I only ever mean to post 3 or 4 a week but I seem to be addicted.
