Solitude Film Festival
Today I went to the cinema and saw Scre4m, Rio, Your Highness, Limitless and Source Code back to back to back to back to back. Unsurprisingly it consumed my entire day.
Scre4m was great, making its usual satirical point in a pretty clear manner, and although it was rather predictable, I suspect some people will be caught off-guard by the ending anyway. I still (controversially) think #3 was the best, but it was a good addition to the series.
Rio was a lot of fun. If you like the trailer, you will like the movie - just lots of music and movement and colour and humour. One for all the family to see. I don't think it was quite as good as Ice Age (which they kept promoting it on the back of), but I do think it was a very enjoyable movie.
Your Highness was godawful. It was as if a tactless American writer had decided we needed a film of "Carry On Questing", but forgot that sexual metaphors are meant to actually be metaphors and not outright statements. The whole script is basically just sex "jokes", although really the joke is "hahaha he said something about sex". Shameful.
Limitless was visually very engaging, and the story was much better than I predicted. Even Bradley Cooper, who I generally am uninterested by, held my attention for the full duration. An impressive feat.
Source Code was pretty good, but as a production student I thought it was interesting to see that practically the whole film is shot in 3 fairly small locations. Yet it was still compelling to watch. Just shows what good directing and acting can do.
All in all, a good day.
