Santa Anna. Barrio de las Letras
Something to do with bars frequented by literary types in the Santa Ana area.
Billed as being the most Bohemian area of Madrid, frequented by Cervantes and Lope de Vega in the 16th century then frequented by Hemingway et al during the Spanish civil war and later.
It is now full of tourists (including yours truly). The bars are decorated with these tiled scenes. They look beautiful but are mostly hidden behind a forest of boards advertising Tapas and "menu touristico" etc.
Whilst this may have been the haunt of starving poets and impoverished artists once upon a time, it certainly isn't now. You need to have a reasonable amount of cash to eat and drink around here.
I reckon the modern Bohemia is the north part of the Masalana area - where the bars are decorated with graffiti art instead of tiles.
Pressing on now - I am determined to get a blip of a jazz club. Except tomorrow is the Madrid marathon and the flea market and the journey home.
Hope you are all having a good weekend.
