An Irish View

Don't Knock it!!

I drive past this house nearly every day as it is on one of the main roads going in and out of Cork.

As I went for a walk earlier I saw the planning notice attached to the door. I crossed the road and was astounded to read that the planning notice is for permission to demolish this period house.

When I got home I decided to check the application. I found that this house was given permission for 2 apartments back in 2007. The conditions of the planning application being granted are fairly strict and include such things as retaining the railings, sash windows, maintaining the cast iron downpipes etc.

The developers are a shadow company of the owners of McMahon's Builders merchants based in Limerick.

My guess is that the conditions were too much for them so they have let the building fall further and further into disrepair until such a time as they can apply to demolish this property...now

I know that it doesn't look much but the original features are there and ripe for renovation. The stone quoins on the corner, the plaster work around the windows, the sash and case windows, all worth restoring. The end result would be far more pleasing to the eye than the plastered concrete monstrosity with PVC windows and doors which will no doubt take it's place.

I for one will object to this historic building being demolished
