The mysterious blue glass is an low pass filter
I'm pretty sure all cameras (minus phone/ipod) have this thing, its a cool sandwich of some materials that blocks out most of the infrared light and anti-aliases the images. It fits right over the image sensor. This is taken from a very very old digital camera (10+ years) back when they only accepted 1gb sd cards.
