The Caul

This is the Caul on the river Nith in Dumfries with Devorgilla's bridge in the background. The bridge was rebuilt in the mid 15th century on the site of the previous one which was built in the 14th century by order of the Lady Devorgilla, wife of John Balliol in honour of whom Balliol College, Oxford is named. Balliol was one of the contenders for the Scottish throne at the same time as Robert Bruce. The buttress at the centre of the bridge is a passing place for carts. It cannot now be used for vehicular traffic as one of the arches was removed in 1794 to enable the road to be widened. Another arch was removed in 1875 so it now has a flight of steps at each end and can be used by pedestrians only.
As you can see, the river is quite full due to the recent rains.

(Probably better viewed large)
