Chung Ling Soo
I have spent the whole evening proof reading a book about a magician and so
am pretty magiced out but feel inspired to write about this fellow, Chung Ling
Soo a Chinese magician from the 19th/early 20th century.
Magic acts were extremely popular in those days and if you were from the exotic
far east you were even more popular. Which is why the American William Robinson
made himself up as the Chinese man Chung Ling Soo. Robinson literally lived the
role and was so good at his act that his wife was suspected of having an affair
since she was seen with "both" men!
He took his act from another magician, Ching Ling Foo who really was Chinese
and who had scorned Robinsons attempts to replicate a trick of his in which he
produced a bowl of water with apples bobbing in it from thin air. Big mistake.
Robinson often performed the same tricks and in the same towns as Ching
and a feud developed (or a publicity stunt developed-take your pick).
Chung Ling Soo died on stage in front of an audience in spectacular fashion
when his bullet-catching trick went wrong..
