Tyuonyi

Drove from Albuqerque up to Taos today, via the Jemez State Monument and Bandelier National Monuments with a small aside to Los Alamos (of Manhatten Project fame) which seems to hold a strange attraction.

Weather wasn't great - not as good as last time I was through - and it was windy and very dusty ... here you see the excavated remains of Tyuonyi in Bandeleier ... the circular "thing" is a kiva, a ceremonial underground chamber. The sharp eyed may make out an unexcavated kiva to the right of this one, in fact there are three here. Think this place was built back in the 1300s ... before the coming of Europeans. I also visited another site in a detached section of the park which hasnt been excavated at all.

New Mexico is still very much Indian country and the descendents of the folks from places like these are still about having moved form the canyons to new pueblos.

Work now, so probably more mundane pics for a few days :-(
