The pansy division
The modern pansy or viola flower originates from the early 1800's. Lord James Gambier and his gardener William Thompson began crossing various viola species at the estate of Lord Gambier in Iver, England.
The word pansy comes from the French pensée, which means literally "thought". It was probably the look of these flowers that earned them the name. The English originally took over the word pensee, but later anglicized it to pansy.
That's all for the history, I just like the look of the flowers! :)
