"St Helen's Well"

Our walk this week took place in "Thetford Forest". We started at the village of Santon Downham, from there we walked the "St Edmund Way" into the market town of Brandon, from Brandon we crossed the river "Little Ouse" onto the "Little Ouse Path".
During the walk along this path we passed the "St Helen's Well", this spring has been known about for about 900 years and the church of "St Helen" once stood on the hill overlooking the spring, (the spring rises at the bottom left hand corner of the photograph).
Objects discovered nearby, dating from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages through to the Saxon and Viking periods show that this distinctive site has been attractive to people for thousands of years.
Pieces of Roman tile, mortar and pottery indicate that a substantial building once stood somewhere between the hill and the river.
