New Zealand: Dunedin

I really wish i new the significance of this image. I was driving through Dunedin on the south coast of the south island of New Zealand. The road was windy, really steep, and it eventually lead to some nice views of the city and some statues. The actual statues had some text explaining the significance of them, however due to age it was almost unreadable.

Now, thanks to the two travel partners i had (up until this morning) i managed to get my hand on an informative book about New Zealand. I read in this book of the history of Dunedin. I was particularly interested in visiting Dunedin purely due to it's links to Edinburgh in Scotland. The city takes it's name from the Gaelic name of Edinburgh which is Dùn Èideann after the first major settlers in the area were from Scotland. As well as the name, the city also take the interest in education from Scotland and ultimately has become the main place for Students to study in New Zealand.

Dunedin is a very Scottish place due to it's history. Aparently not long after the Scottish settlers arrived in the area alot more people from throughout the UK arrived and eventually the Scottish were a minority, but the initial mark left by the Scottish was enough to make Dunedin the most Scottish city in New Zealand.

My experience of Dunedin was amazing, i have yet to walk along a street anywhere in the world that isn't in Scotland where everyone i hear speaking has a broad Scottish accent. Unfortunately i never spent alot of time in Dunedin, however it's a place i'd like to explore more in the future.
